HANDICAP RULES
All swimmers are handicapped to ensure that each has an equal opportunity to win a place in their heat.
Each swimmer shall do one swim as a “Time Trial” to establish a handicap time. One point is awarded for this swim, and in ensuing swims the points are allocated as follows:-
1 st place 4 points
2 nd place 3 points
3 rd place 2 points
The rest 1 point
A bonus of 3 points is awarded if the swimmer betters his/her handicap time. That handicap time will then be adjusted to the new “Best Time:, provided that the swimmer gained a placing in the heat.
In Freestyle, if a swimmer does not come up to his/her handicap time over 3 consecutive swims, irrespective of whether or not he/she gained a placing, then on the fourth week a new handicap will be given, which is the average of those three weeks.
In the Formstrokes (Butterfly, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Individual Medley), and in the long distance events, the handicap is adjusted after 2 consecutive swims.
The long distance events are 200m and 400m Freestyle. To compete in these distances, the swimmer must first have graduated to the 100m F/S distance.
Championship Distances for swims:
These distances need to be attained before the championships are held to complete. During the season, lessor distances may be swum as listed in the calendar.

POINTSCORES:
The Freestyle pointscore is divided into two – before Christmas and after Christmas. All other strokes continue throughout the season.
Race sheets are placed on the Noticeboard in the Clubroom each week. Children and parents are encouraged to check these results and watch the improvements in times over the season. If you don’t understand the paperwork, please do ask a nearby Official of the Club to explain to you.
